Lt Cdr (Actg) Rajiv Nair (519/72)
Following Indo- Sri Lanka peace record it became necessary for the Navy to Institute a joint patrol in the Palk Bay and on Sri Lanka coast to prevent illicit movement of men and material. Indian Naval landing aircraft utility L- 36 was among the ships deployed for this task
The weather and sea conditions in the area are very inhospitable at this time small ships such as IN LCU – 36 have limited onboard amenities. The ships have to be deployed from home base for long periods and under severe constraints during which even water and rations had to be severely curtailed. Continuous vigil had to be maintained through day and night and this task increased in magnitude as the situation deteriorated following the violent actions by the LTTE militants.
Through these operations, the ship operated in hazardous and inadequately charted waters with very limited navigational facilities and under threat of militant attack which necessitated taking many risks.
Throughout this period, acting Lieutenant Commander KR Nair as the commanding officer of the ship showed leadership skills and courage of order. Despite adverse operating conditions, he motivated his men to sustain the deployment and execute the ordered task with tenacity and skill. The strength of purpose shown by the officer and his firm resolve and determination to sustain the deployment in the face of adverse conditions are in keeping with the highest traditions of the Navy. For his bravery of highest order, the officer is awarded Nausena Medal (Gallantry)
